Fascism is an ideology that demands the ordering of society into a strict hierarchy based on class collaboration in order to benefit the nation. The nation is central to fascist ideology, the state takes full centrality to being. Though the state has a lot of power, this system fundamentally maintains capitalism in a certain form and is often rigidly anti-communist. This class collaborationism tends to go alongside mass oppression of the working class and their organisations, and the centrality of the nation tends to generate “national enemies” as scapegoats, such as ethnic minorities, homosexuals, etc. This system usually has a religious and mass ideological level in order to maintain national unity and ultra-conservatism is enforced in order to defend tradition and return to a mythologised “golden age”. It is a form of ultra-nationalism and it is anti-democratic and authoritarian.

Socialism is a system in which the means of production are placed under the control of the empowered working class through democratic institutions and direct control. This is achieved through the class struggle being taken to its ultimate conclusion, with the workers and other oppressed peoples overthrowing the capitalist system and the ruling class. This new society seeks to empower the people through democracy and wishes to create a society based on radical egalitarianism. This radical new social condition, extending from the radical new economic condition, is inherently anti-racist, and socialist theory ultimately rejects nationalism as an ends. It wishes to fundamentally liberate people into a new social system, which is opposed to the existing social institutions.This is true for the most common form of socialism, Marxist Socialism, as well as Libertarian Socialism, Feminist Socialism, etc. Some regional forms claim to be socialism, but in many cases maintain capitalism and could be more considered nationalism and social democracy.

As you can see, these two ideas do not share common features. Authoritarian states that claim to be socialist are the result of a failure to produce socialism.
