It’s safer than aspirin. Physicians willingly admit that their advice is not needed for it to be taken correctly. The largest organization of pediatricians in the nation is urging its members to pre-write prescriptions for patients who may need it, because it’s so safe they believe everyone should have access without visiting a doctor.

This medicine is often desperately needed. It must be taken within a specific 120 hour period in order to be effective. It prevents a condition that can be devastating to the people it affects, especially young people, who are more likely to develop depression, drop out of school, and even die. Furthermore, if young people can’t get this medicine when they need it, they are more likely to spend their lives in poverty, never marry, and have their kids end up in jail.

So why has the supposedly progressive Obama administration repeatedly spoken out against making this medicine available over-the-counter to young people, even after a federal judge ruled that girls under seventeen must be given access to this medicine? Why would the president go against all scientific evidence and say that the medicine “could be dangerous if misused”?

Because the medicine is emergency contraception, the medical condition it treats is pregnancy, and Americans are terrified of teenage girls being in control of their own sexuality.
”

- Anya Josephs, Girls of All Ages Need Access to Emergency Contraception (via sparkamovement)

seriouslyamerica:

Meet the fourth-grader who has been dubbed “The Michael Moore of the Grade-School Lunchroom” by the New York Times, Zachary Maxwell:

Like many things in the life of a fourth grader, Zachary’s movie started as a dispute with his parents. He told them that he wanted to start packing his own lunch, but they were skeptical. Lunch is free at his school, P.S. 130 Hernando De Soto in Little Italy, and his parents liked the look of the Department of Education’s online menus, which describe delicious meals, full of whole grains and fresh vegetables, some even designed by celebrity chefs.

…

In the film, Zachary, who is not above cheesy costumes and goofy special effects, makes a point that is under the radar of most conversations about the quality of school lunches: that despite the Education Department’s efforts to improve nutrition, there is a disconnect between the wholesome meals described on school menus and the soggy, deep-fried nuggets frequently dished up in the lunchrooms.

This kid is going places.

Hey guys! I’m looking to create an online shop where I’ll be printing shirts to help smash the patriarchy! The only problem is that I have no t-shirt designing skills whatsoever. I’m looking for one of you (or maybe many of you if there are lots of great designs) to help make this shop more of a reality!

The poster reads:

Create a unique and artistic shirt relating to hatred of the patriarchy

T-Shirts may include text, an illustration, or both

Submit drawings to liesthepatriarchytoldme.tumblr.com/submit

Designs are due Monday, June 2 by 12 p.m. PST

Winner will receive a free shirt containing their design + have their design printed to thousands!

In addition

Reblog to win a free shirt with the winner’s design!

Follow liesthepatriarchytoldme.tumblr.com for a bonus entry (likes don’t count, sorry!)

If you reblog, do not delete any of this text, or your reblog will not count towards a free shirt. This post must reach 400 reblogs for the free shirt to be given away. If it reaches 800 reblogs, I’ll giveaway two shirts, and so on and so forth!

Best of luck!! :)

It initially seeks to expand in the online community. If you’d like to share your opinion please do so via twitter using the hashtag #ImNotaJoke. You erase their experiences and perspective, their struggles and obstacles, their unique way of having to deal with those things in a world that also erases them. With the words, ‘but humans are humans’ or the bullshit dramatics of ‘we all bleed red’ normal people can simply pretend that if we all did things the way they did, then everything would work out okay. But, yes, we all bleed red but you don’t treat a papercut the same way you treat a gash, you don’t treat an infected wound the same way you treat one that isn’t, you don’t treat a wound to the leg the same way you treat a wound to the gut. You are not acknowledging someone’s personhood when you ignore the very things that make their lives different than yours, and when you refuse to understand that their circumstances have given them their own perspective that is just as valid as yours. More valid in fact – their perspective about their experiences that you haven’t been through is far more valid than anything you could ever think about it.”

-
The danger of worldviews (Speaking when the world sleeps)

A male who has divested of male privilege, who has embraced feminist politics, is a worthy comrade in struggle, in no way a threat to feminism, whereas a female who remains wedded to sexist thinking and behavior infiltrating feminist movement is a dangerous threat. Significantly, the most powerful intervention made by consciousness-raising groups was the demand that all females confront their internalized sexism, their allegiance to patriarchal thinking and action, and their commitment to feminist conversion. That intervention is still needed. It remains the necessary step for anyone choosing feminist politics. The enemy within must be transformed before we can confront the enemy outside. The threat, the enemy, is sexist thought and behavior. As long as females take up the banner of feminist politics without addressing and transforming their own sexism, ultimately the movement will be undermined.”

-
-bell hooks, Feminism is for Everybody

just going to emphasize that last sentence again: As long as females take up the banner of feminist politics without addressing and transforming their own sexism, ultimately the movement will be undermined.

I recently came across a status on Facebook, which criticized non-native English speaking college students about their lack of understanding when it came to the basic mechanics of the English language. her status was this:

If I am required to have proper grammar in my school work, so should every other student. I do not care if you are not an English native speaker. Spell and grammar check will quickly clear up most of the ridiculous errors in your comments on my article. Because of the fact I can barely comprehend what your English meant, I refuse to respond.

This status made my cringe for many reasons. For one, I work as a writing tutor at the university I go to, and many of the students I see are non-native English speakers. Now as a writing tutor, I believe it is more important to strengthen content and develop close reading skills than urging students to perfect their understanding of things like verb-tense agreement and comma usage. However, I’m constantly met with adversity, because many of them feel pressured by their professors to adopt a rhetoric that resembles that of a native English speaker. I believe that this push-back alludes to an inherent flaw within the public education system, which places more emphasis on sounding like a good writer than actually being one. Sure, these students can come and see me, I can act as an editor, and they can leave with shortcomings in their critical analyses and a general lack of understanding when it comes to the inner-workings of their arguments…but isn’t that a problem?

Professors are not editors. They are critical thinkers, and they should teach students to think critically about their own writing. It’s easy to mark up a paper with extra commas and semicolons, but it’s another thing to form a dialogue with a student about the content of their writing.

And then there’s this: Why shouldn’t professors adjust their grammar expectations for non-native English speakers? After all, they are not as familiarized with the language. Similarly, why shouldn’t they hold native English speakers to a higher expectation when it comes to showing a basic understanding of the mechanics used in English? But what I’ve learned is that the academy doesn’t employ this language discrepancy. Non-native speakers constantly feel the need to perfect their grammar and what’s lost is invaluable: they fail to understand that their THOUGHTS in and of themselves are more important than perfecting how they’re stated.

By placing so much risk on grammar, we run the risk of marginalizing the voices of those who may not have access to the basic understanding of mechanics native speakers do. Furthermore, we run the risk of stagnating their growth as critical thinkers. Just because they don’t say things the way we do, are their words any less valuable?

I believe these ramblings of mine are deeply tied to the investment in whiteness and forced assimilation of brown bodies into the expectations of whites when it comes to language and intelligence. If we look at this in layman’s terms and connect the term “non-native speaker” to that of a non-white person, then we can see how this provides insight into one of the many ways the public education system is putting people of color at a disadvantage against their white counterpart.

Giving White People The Illusion Of Darker Skin Makes Them Less Racist

An optical illusion can change the implicit biases of Caucasian people against people with darker skin, according to a study published in the August 2013 edition of Cognition.

The research, a collaboration between Royal Holloway University of London, the Central European University in Budapest and Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, analyzed the implicit racial biases of 34 Caucasian participants, then subjected them to something called the Rubber Hand Illusion, where they watched a rubber hand being touched by a paintbrush as they felt their own hand being stimulated out of sight. The illusion creates the sense that the fake hand is part of the subject’s body, even when it’s of a completely different skin color.

The more the participants felt like the darker skinned fake hand was their own, the less racist they came off in a second implicit bias test.

In another test, participants underwent the same process, but some saw a white hand, while others saw a dark hand. The implicit bias test showed that the opinions of those who saw the white hand didn’t change, while again those who felt ownership of the darker hand felt less racial bias.

“Across two experiments, the more intense the participants’ illusion of ownership over the dark-skinned rubber hand, the more positive their implicit racial attitudes became,” the authors write.

“It comes down to a perceived similarity between white and dark skin,” lead author Lara Maister of Royal Holloway University of London said in a press statement. “The illusion creates an overlap, which in turn helps to reduce negative attitudes because participants see less difference between themselves and those with dark skin.”

The study suggests that racial biases aren’t necessarily cemented by adulthood, but that they can be altered. “Changes in body-representation may therefore constitute a core, previously unexplored, dimension that in turn changes social cognition processes,” the authors write. They suggest that future research into different social groups and stereotypes could expand on their work, since this research only explored the attitudes of white individuals.
